Bio
"I make my home in outer space. It is a cold and lonely place."
- from 'Flash Gordon' by The Profets
Atom Bliss is the name Tom Hallstein writes and records music under. That moniker originated when he joined Prince Benefit [of the doubt] and Zebutron X (Don Scott and Brad Stine, respectively) in the Profets in the mid-70's playing a blend of space-rock, jazz-rock and prog rock around northern California. He has been playing guitar and synthesizers ever since.
Since childhood Tom has been fascinated by sound, music and audio recording. As a tot his favorite book was 'Gerald McBoing Boing'; a story about a boy who didn't talk but would express himself through sound effects. In his early teens, a friend's parents' reel-to-reel tape recorder offered hours of fun recording odd sounds then speeding them up, slowing them down or reversing them. A few years later he discovered synthesizers. Whoa!
Through the years, Tom has worked in recording studios, mixed live sound, sold studio, broadcast and sound reinforcement gear and high end home audiophile systems. He then worked 20 years as a landscape, nature and travel photographer.
Now retired from photography and living in Sonoma County, CA, Tom is back to where most musicians start: playing music in a bedroom, which he truly enjoys. He hopes you enjoy too!
